A nice surprise
2 02 2007Today we get on our fourth and final boat down the Amazon. We leave from our current base of operations, Manaus, which is an international port, yet 1500 km inland (this should convey how large the river is here - huge ocean going ships are at port here). We have decided this time to book a Suite, which includes ensuite toilet and shower, air conditioning, and a proper bed. This costs more than 2 hammock tickets but we have heard that where we are going is hellishly hot.
Also, at the tour office within our hotel, the ever-helpful (and English speaking) Ricardo has found us a cheaper deal flying from the city of Belem (the end of our boat trip) to our next Brazilian town, Fortalezza. Also, we were able to pay with my Visa card! It’s nice not to have to carry hundreds of dollars worth of cash currency around.
So our next post will be at least 5 days from now, stay tuned…

I have just read your entire trip- what an amazing adventure. Between the heat, the dirt and odors, and other unsightly things, I don’t know if I would have made it as far as you have!!! Congrats on this amazing trip- keep updating the web site, and have fun (as I am sure you two will!!!). See you in a few months for the wedding. Cheers

If you find the gold, let me know! I just got laid off from my job, along with 2/3 of the rest of the company. Those who didn’t get laid off got about a 40% to 50% cut in pay. You are definitely doing the more expansive alternative to monster.com. I’m really impressed by your adventuresome approach to foreign cuisine. I’m not sure I would have the nerve to try pirhana (sp?). But I would love to see a pink dolphin (or was it porpoise?). And I bet the Amazon is amazing. Looking forward to more vicarious adventures…love to both,
